Gwen John (Welsh, 1876-1939), Self-Portrait, 1902
Gwen was the sister of Augustus John. Like him she studied at the Slade School of Art. In 1903 she traveled to France and a year later found work as a model for Auguste Rodin who she then had a love affair with. Her devotion to the much older and famous Rodin continued unabated for the next ten years, as documented in her thousands of fervent letters to him, even though he had broken off the relationship.
In spite of her significantly lower output her reputation has fared better over the years than that of her brother’s. [src]
