The Hoppers had a stormy relationship. He was quiet and she chatty. He had admired her independence while they were courting but then expected her to stay at home after their marriage.  There is a story of him wrestling with Jo outside a Cape Cod restaurant. He was trying to pull her of a car by her legs while she clung to the steering wheel. [i]
