Paul Gauguin

Living in French Polynesia, being supported by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, Gauguin got into legal trouble for taking the natives’ side against French colonialists. He was charged with libeling the governor, fined 500 francs and sentenced to a month in prison. Suffering from syphilis and alcoholism he died in May 1903 of an overdose of morphine before he could start the prison sentence. He was 54 years old.  (Wiki)
