William Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905) - Atelier at the Academy Julian, Paris, 1891
Damien Bartoli in his Biography of William Bouguereau said:
“Bouguereau is unquestionably one of history’s greatest artistic geniuses. Yet in the past century, his reputation and unparalleled accomplishments have undergone a libelous, dishonest, relentless and systematic assault of immense proportions.”
On the other hand, Ingrid Schaffner said, in her book on Matisse (Bouguereau was an instructor at the Academie Julien when Matisse was a student there.):
“Bouguereau was a master of lick-and-tickle paintings of luscious nymphs.” (is that an art history term?)
